What is Microneedling and How Can it Benefit You?
Microneedling is a simple, safe, and minimally invasive treatment that is highly effective for skin rejuvenation, all types of scarring, stretch marks, and more. Microneedling has been around for many years and recently became popular due to Kim Kardashian posting her Instagram photos after her “Vampire” facial. If you google her, you will see a photo of her face with blood smeared all over it. This is just for shock value. That is not what your face should look like after a treatment!
Years ago the treatments started with Physicians using a hand held derma-roller, a device with a surgical steel barrel covered in very fine needles ranging in different lengths. Although they are still being used by some in the medical cosmetic setting, it is the new generation of rechargeable hand held pen style devices with disposable tips that is the most popular choice used for the procedure.
We use the only FDA cleared device, the SkinPen Precision, for our microneedling treatments. The pen is used with a onetime use, disposable cartridge with fourteen 32 gauge needles (very fine) that we can adjust the depth at which they penetrate the skin while they oscillate at approximately 10,000 rpm.
Does Microneedling Hurt?
There is little or no discomfort with microneedling. A topical numbing anesthetic is applied to the treatment area for approximately 30 minutes prior to treatment. The treatment takes about 30 minutes to complete.
What is the Downtime?
There is very little downtime. You will be bright pink to red for the first day. On the second day, you may still have some pinkness, by day 3, most clients have no pinkness at all. You will be able to apply makeup on day 2. You may experience some dry flakiness around day 3.
How Does Microneedling Work?
As we get into our 30’s, our collagen and elastin starts to break down and our natural ability to produce new collagen and elastin slows way down, depleting our smooth firm plumped youthful skin. Our skin becomes loose, fine lines become wrinkles and so on.
The SkinPen punctures the skin creating thousands of tiny channels in the skin. These channels allow for deeper penetration of topicals used during the procedure. Thus we are creating a “controlled” injury to the skin which stimulates wound healing and the release of your own growth factors.
This leads to the reorganization of old collagen fibers and triggers the laying down of new normal collagen and elastin production. Increasing these two important proteins maintain the skin’s tightness, firmness, plumpness and a more even-toned complexion. This is an exceptional treatment on its own or used in combination with alternating laser treatments. Microneedling can be performed with or without using platelet rich plasma, or PRP.
What is PRP?
Plasma rich protein is a component of your blood. It aids in stimulating your growth factors necessary for wound healing. When used with microneedling, it “boosts” the process and offers a more beneficial treatment outcome.
A small amount of your blood is obtained through venipuncture and is spun down in a centrifuge. The whole blood is separated from the platelets and they “float” on top. They are then drawn into a syringe and applied to the area to be treated.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The number of treatments you will need varies on the condition we are treating. We always start with a minimum of 3 treatments, performed 4-6 weeks apart.
